The great unknown
Despite having become Court Painter during the reign of Phillip IV, the life and work of Sebastián Martínez had been forgotten, even by the experts. The Prado Museum’s recent acquisition of his magnificent St. Joseph with the Child, a painting that like many others is signed, has served to bring back the name of a fundamental artist, whose works have in the past been attributed Velázquez, Alonso Cano and in particular, to Antonio del Castillo.
