A Velazquez in New York
A unique restoration

Portrait of a Man was branded as a Velázquez when it arrived at the Metropolitan in 1944. It had been restored twice, and still had a third that would alienate him further from the master's hand. The authorship was withdrawn in 1963 and until just a few months it has not been returned to the artist's signature that corresponds to it. The architect of its restoration, Michael Gallagher, and the Hispanist Jonathan Brown, tell us the story and recovery of this work.
