Completing the Cussida’s Apostolate
The twelve apostles and the Savior's figure painted by José de Ribera when he was 20 years old make up one of the most important series of all Spanish baroque painting. Made on behalf of the Spanish diplomat Pedro Cussida during the painter's stay in Rome, the canvases were dispersed, but the researcher Gianni Papi has managed to reconstruct the series with the absence of two apostles. The discovery of James the Great completes one of the finest ensembles of the youth of the Valencian master.
