Latin Art brings in a total of 11.346.975 € at Christie's
The 15th of November sale brought new found enthusiasm for Brazilian art and mexican scultpture
The Latin American art sale this week established nine new records for Antonio Bandeira, Hércules Barsotti, José Pancetti, Alfredo Volpi and Franz Weissmann, proving the rising interest for Brazilian art and fresh art at competitive prices.
The diverse catalogue of mixed disciplines, nationalities and periods aroused special attention for Miguel Covarrubias who established anewrecord for his work Legong performance under the Banyan tree, auctioned off for 290.000 dollars in spite of a starting price of 50.000 dollars. Equally sucessfull was the lot Vaca Roja by Francisco Toledo, a work that combines oil and sand on canvas and that fetched more than 900.000 dollars.
But without doubt the big names continue to bring in the big bucks and th best result of the evening was achieved by Fernando Botero for his monumental sculpture of Dancers, which was sold for 1.700.000 dollars. The enormous sculpture was exhibited outside the New York headquarters of Christie's auction house this Fall and was a major attraction in the island both for pedestrians and tourists.
The head of the Latin American Art department stated to the press: " Brazilian art shines tonght... Mexican painting and sculpture performed well at auction and we look forward to the continuation of day Sale, tomorrow".Alfonso Carbajo Agrasar
