Heritage Auctions' Hammer price of the year
The annual results of the American firm point to several national records and international world record for the Comic category
Adding up more than 677 million dollars, the texas auction firm, which began operating scarcely 10 years ago, has made 2011 the most lucrative year in its history. Several records can be forseen for some collecting categories but, without doubt, Comics continue to be the firms signature specialty.
The numbers speak for themselves: 26 million dollars from the Comic category, 20 million dollars for Illustration art, and for the newcomer, Jewllery, nothing less than 17.4 million dollars. If we review some of the greatest hammer prices of the year we uncover equally astronomical results.
But it is in the numismatic category where Heritage has found a, still very green, market segment. A total of 39.45 million dollars, more than 60 per cent in respect to last year, make it the new winner in the salesroom, surpassing even the signature category of the firm, Comics. Vintage Comics and Comic Art is a category which Heritage revoluctionized by making it a respectable and solid investment asset. With a total of 26 million dollars, it has surpassed in 13 per cent its performance respecting last year. Although it has already held the record in sales volume for any auction house in the world, for two consecutive years.
Jewells constitute the House lastest conquest, attracting a total of 17,4 million dollars, more than double of last year's results. The Vintage Sports Collectibles category also doubled its performance compared to last year, with a total of 16 million dollars.
Other new categories such as wine, which began in 2010, Arms and Armour, Music and Entertaiment or Silver and Decorative Arts, may soon become reference categories and with a little bit of luck, may receive a new impulse that will revolutionize their standing in the market. Alfonso Carbajo Agrasar
