Dorotheum II, Spanish Old Masters
The April catalogue gathered more than a dozen works by Spanish painters
High and low were the hammer prices for Spanish painting, a very different performance to what we are accustomed within the Penninsula's frontiers. By price, the Still Life attributed years ago by Peter Cherry to Juan de Espinosa, and recently considered to be an autograph work of the the Valencian master by the English professor, tops the list. The balanced composition of Vegetables and fruits sold for 170.000 euros, more than double the estimate provided by the auction room, to dissapear forever from the market, having been adjudged to a prestigious American museum.
Another Still Life such as the superb and gory Kitchen scene with Calf's head and goat by the well known Neapolitian painter Giussepe Recco sold for 45.000 euros, more than double its starting price. Meanwhile the symetrical composition of Bowl with Grapes and Flowers by bernanrdo Polo, until recently known as the Pseudo-Hiepes, did not register bids above the 70.000 euros starting price. On the other hand a pair of Flower Baskets attributed to Arellano's workshop, without much interest, was sold for 15.000 euros.
Still within the secular painting genre: Two fishmongers in an interior, attributed by William Jordan to Antonia Pugia, sold for 90.000 euros. A price that contrasts with its aparrent lack of quality and rather risky attribution. One of the more accomplished compositions by juan de la Corte sold for 40.000 euros while the El Greco's workshop portrait of Fray Hortensio Felix Paravicino sold for its high estimate of 100.000 euros.
The Annunciation by Sebastiano Conca, a varation of the canvas preserved in the chapel of Santissima Annuunciata in Sessa Aurunco fetched 18.000 euros, however the representation of The Allegories Faith, Charity and Hope failed to find a buyer. The Inmaculate Conception attributed to the workshop of Francisco Bayeu y Subías sold for 5.000 euros, however The Annunciation attributed to Palomino failed to sell. The Penitent Saint Jerome attributed to José de Ribera did not register any bids. Alfonso carbajo Agrasar
