The Stedelijk in Amsterdam is not closed for works

The museum presents two exhibitions: one will tell the history of the museum through its old exhibition posters; the other addresses the identity of contemporary art in Netherlands.

While the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is renovating and expanding its building, the works have not prevented the staging of two temporary exhibitions which will be on show in the part of the building which is already finished, from August 28.

One of the aims of ‘Taking Place’ is to tell the history of the Dutch museum by showing its exhibition posters. Since its opening in 1895 the museum has become the point of reference for the poster design, especially in the period when Willem Sandberg became its director, in 1945, personally taking charge of all the imprints until his retirement in 1962.

From 1963 to 1984, the posters by Wim Crouwel gave a contemporary look to the museum,. For the following eight years the museum was directed by Wim Beeren and the posters acquired a new air thanks to the expressive designs by Anthon Beeke. In this way, the Stedelijk became the most important venue for the graphic design in the country.

The exhibition will show a total of 359 works by around 20 artist including Yael Bartana, Hala Elkoussy, Iris Kensmil, Job Koelewijn, Gert Jan Kocken, Renzo Martens and Barbara Visser. Some works will be presented at the Museum for the first time and will be acquired before the end of this year.

‘Monumentalism’, the second exhibition to take place before the end of summer, addresses the cultural identity of contemporary art in Netherlands. It will occupy one half of the ground floor galleries in the restored building.
