Reward for Vang Gogh's 'Poppy Flowers'
An Egyptian multimillionaire offers one million Egyptian pound to whom informs on the theft.
Egyptian telecommunications tycoon Naguib Sawiris has offered a reward for information leading to the recovery of Van Gogh’s painting Poppy Flowers stolen on August 20 from the Museum Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil in Cairo.
Sawiris, chairman of the wireless network companyr Orascom Telecom, said he would pay one million Egyptian pounds (around $175.000) to the person who provides reliable information on the painting’s whereabouts. The painting, known as Poppy Flowers or Vase and Flowers is valued at more than $ 50 million.
Since it was stolen, ten days ago, from the Museum Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil, news on the faulty security system has been incessant. Seemingly, not a single image was recorded by the security cameras on the day of the theft.
While the search for the canvas by the post-Impressionist master continues, Egyptian police have arrested and interrogated some of the museum’s staff. Furthermore, the Ministry of Culture has also announced that a security control room will be established for all the nation’s museums.
