Mirrors and Echoes at the Museum

The Centre Pompidou in Metz takes a new step in the artistic relationship that weaves from his beginnings with Daniel Buren

Metz, 05/13/11

A year after its inauguration, the Centre Pompidou-Metz rejoins Daniel Buren to undertake a new project. The joint invitation of Mudam Luxembourg, the Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean and the Centre Pompidou in Metz, has led Buren a new charge in the field of the specific installation, with two spectacular structures designed for the halls of the Pompidou.

Daniel Buren, Echos, Travaux in situ, offers a new opportunity to the artist to work in the museum space by challenging and changing the characteristics of the exhibition space. A work that focuses on building new ephemeral forms, transforming the perception of space through walls, hallways, lights and colors, with a surprising economy of means by shocking and effective in this goal.

In this same trend of experimentation and transformation of space, the exhibition offers a new counterpoint to the image of the city through the particular artist's vision. The work entitled La Ville empruntée, multipliée et fragmentée: travail in situ is designed to give the viewer a visual experience of his new surroundings, transforming the view of the city through many distorting mirrors.

Throughout his career, the artist born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1938, has carried out numerous experiments on the "ways of seeing". Based on the characteristic economy of his art, he fought the contents of the illusionistic painting neutralizing the narrative and giving to the viewer different ways of vision. Later, in 1967, he took the streets with various covert operations and, from the Kassel Documenta V (organized by Harald Szeemann), the artist continued his work exploring the inherent possibilities in transforming public spaces of museums arounf the world.

Daniel Buren, Échos, Travaux in situ is the last specific project for a museum. It will be seen at the Centre Pompidou in Metz until September 9. Alejandro Martínez
