'Walead Beshty. A diagram of forces'
The CA2M of Móstoles presents a panoramic vision of the London artist through a selection of his works from the last ten years
Commissioned by Ferran Barenblit and Jacob Fabricius, the show exhibits Walead Beshty. A diagram of forces, presented by the Centro de Arte 2 de Mayo (CA2M), offers a panoramic vision of the English artist (London, 19767) living in Los Ángeles, a city where he works as an associate professor at the Art Center College of Design. An artistic oeuvre that works around the transitory nature of daily life, particularly in its interruptions, developing the context of intermediate time, in moments of transition, that generate a space for though and reflexion on a work of art.
His works are strongly linked to the casual circumstances of their creation. Time, movement and light condition the materialization of his work, which is finally presented as a piece of sculpture, photography or architecture. Objects such as Travel Pictures (2006-2008), in which the concept of ‘chance’ plays a fundamental role to produce the photographs; or Excursionist Views (2001-2005), which portray a vacant neighbourhood where we find its future in this intermediate time frame (eviction or demolition). The isolated plants and vegetation in the middle of the streets are the subject of focus of Island Flora (2005); while the series of American Passages (2001-present), presents images of abandoned buildings and transformed into the lucky score of a capitalist nightmare.
This way, the circumstances that surround Walead Beshty’s practice, such as the production, the transport of the piece and the trip of the artist himself, are reflected in the works as a way of documenting his knowledge. As a result, the exhibition that can today be visited at the CA2M participates in the construction of the piece, questioning continuously the work of art and the world that surrounds us. Walead Beshty. A diagram of forces occupies the rooms of the Centro de Arte 2 de Mayo at Móstoles until the following 2nd of October. Alejandro Martínez and Ana Rodríguez-Andía
