Transforming the ordinary

Sala Alcalá 31 of Comunidad Madrid organizes the first great individual exhibition in Spain of British artist Martin Creed

Madrid, 12/14/11

After filling with balloons the MARCO Vigo museum a few months ago, the 2001 Turner Prize winner, Martin Creed (Wakefield, 1968), presents in Madrid a new project with a set of murals created for the occasion. Along with these, are some of his best known pieces -such as Work No. 88 A sheet of A4 paper crumpled Into a ball (1995) or the video Work No. 670 Orson and Sparky (2007), still unknown in Spain-, with the purpose of convert this exhibition into the first retrospective in our country.

Creed works constantly with the perception of the basic nature of things. His installations, videos and drawings are inspired by objects, words and sounds of everyday life. With gestures -as simple as crumpling paper-, the artist wants to remove the accessory and direct the viewer's gaze into a modal network with the environment. In this way, he manages to change the perception of the materials around the spectator. On the other hand, Creed combines his role as plastic creator with his music band (formed 1994), giving concerts around the world.

Martin Creed. Things, will be on exhibition at Sala Alcalá 31 of Comunidad  deMadrid until February 26, 2012. It was made possible through the collaboration in the sponsorship of the British Council and Finsa. A great opportunity to learn how the mundane is turning into contemporary art. Alejandro Martinez
