'The persistence of geometry' at CaixaForum

An exhibition on the use of geometry in sculpture in the collections of the Fundación "la Caixa" and the MACBA museum

Madrid, 12/15/11

Throughout the twentieth century, geometry was leading several artistic practices of avant-garde art. The persistence of geometry. Works from the collections of the Fundación "la Caixa" and MACBA is intended to present to the viewer its presence in the art of recent decades –the essential forms, minimalism and geometric intersections of art in architecture– from a selection of 96 works by 31 artists from the collections of both institutions.

This is the second major joint exhibition after the presentation of Volume! at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona on November, and includes works by Donald Judd, Bruce Nauman, James Turrell, Robert Smithson, Gordon Matta-Clark, Matt Mullican, Richard Long, Francesc Torres, Angels Ribé, Jordi Colomer, León Ferrari, Damian Ortega, Rodney Graham, James Lee Byars, David Maljkovic, Jose Dávila and Ettore Spalletti, among others.

The role of geometry in art of the twentieth century shows the breakdown of traditional forms and the redefinition of the artwork through the experience of form and space. His legacy in Western culture attributes botj cosmological and scientific functions, but also aesthetic and mystical concepts. This is the area developed in the early decades of the last century under the sign of abstraction and modernity. A new vehicle of idealism and utopia, which facilitated the removal of the representation of reality and encouraged aspiration to create a new visual language that embodied the ideas of purity and perfection.

The persistence of geometry. Works from the collections of the Fundación "la Caixa" and MACBA, will remain in CaixaMadrid until March 25, 2012. The exhibition is curated by Nimfa Bisbe - director of the Foundation Contemporary Art Collection "la Caixa" - in collaboration with Bartomeu Marí, director of the MACBA.
