Antoni Tàpies. 60's and 70's

The works on view are, for the most part, large in format,  of mixed technique and on different types of support

Madrid , 01/18/12

10 works by Antoni Tápies comprise the exhibition the gallery Elvira González has dedicated to the artist Antoni Tàpies. They have been carefully selected among the works he executed during the 70's and 60's. They are large format works, of mixed technique and on different supports. This period has been chosen precisely because it marks the beginning of an evlution in his artistic career. Tàpies appears as a mature painter, sure of what he wants to express. It may have been then that he was called or conquered the title of the master of Spanish informalism. It was not, as it is possible to assume, a complete and abrupt break to his prior work, but an evolution to which a new element is added: his political discomfort.

Antoni looks for new routes, experiences and textures. Colors and canvases used up until then are not enough. From his hand other motifs appear and materials until then considered unusable. These may be used paper, sack cloth, cardboard, wood, cloths or everyday objects. Everything, or almost everything, is acceptable, because he transforms the unoble into noble and whats used and despised into new. Zen philosophy is at the bottom of his reasoning and Povera art triumphs in the world. Tàpies creates, in these years, his most signature works.

Antoni Tàpies did not forget the graphic medium. Since 1947 he dedicated a great deal of time to it. The result has been folders and bibliophile books for which he counted on the collaboration of writers such as Alberti Brossa, Gimferrer, Saramago or Guillén. He is also the author of several essays, some of which have been translated into other languages.
