New narratives of contemporary art
Fundación "la Caixa" and the MACBA museum presents at Guggenheim Bilbao new fruits of the union agreement of their collections
Last Monday was presented in Bilbao The inverted mirror: art from the collections of the Fundación "la Caixa" and the MACBA, with the presence of Juan Ignacio Vidarte - director of the Guggenheim Bilbao museum –, Elisa Durán -deputy director of La Caixa Foundation, Bartomeu Marí - director of the MACBA – and the curator, Álvaro Rodríguez Fominaya from the Solomon R. Guggenheim New York. The exhibition displayed at the third floor, explores key trends and movements in the development of the visual arts since the late forties to the present.
Through the work of artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Sigmar Polke, Julian Schnabel, Jeff Wall, Martha Rosler or Pistolletto Michelangelo, among others, the curator has tried to "create new narratives for contemporary art," as noted iBartomeu Marí, to consolidate the path of collaboration between these institutions, which recently joined their collections. A tour of 52 works by 93 international artists spanning six decades of artistic production.
Volume!, curated by Ninfa Bisbe for the MACBA, and The Persistence of Geometry, by Antonia Perelló in Caixaforum Madrid, were the first visible results of this agreement that has allowed the formation of a collection consisting of 5,500 today works. For the occasion, gathered pieces of Dau al Set, El Paso, the Vancouver School or Düsseldorf School, with special attention to photography, video and large-format sculpture, that enable new discourses on the theme of Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto.
In fact, The mirror architecture is presented in Bilbao as a metaphor for the accumulation, transfer and interference processes that are fundamental to the birth and development of the entire art collection that gives rise to these new readings. Six sections – Dau Al Set / El Paso, Recreation function in the photograph, Landschaft, the Self and the Other, The limits of performance, The inverted mirror and Lightness, Gravity and other impossibilities –, which demonstrate the consistency of the project and the plurality of discourses generated by contemporary art. Until September 2 at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Alejandro Martínez
