Adrian Tyler: 'Dust to Dust'

London photographer based in Madrid presents at Caylus Gallery the catalog of his last exhibition

Madrid, 06/07/12

Photography as vanitas is the title of the essay by Francisco Calvo Serraller (Madrid, 1948) that accompanies the edition of the catalog of Dust to Dust, the latest project of photographer Adrian Tyler (London, 1963) which is displayed in Caylus Gallery from May 23. A text that defines the "revealing gaze" of this artist that, at this time, has focused his lens on visual concepts related to the vanitas expressed from two angles: "unhide" and "cover" over time.

For Calvo Serraller, the key operation of these photographs lies in a desire that weighs the magnetism of the images from this double game -unhide/cover-, altering its meaning in a strange scenario that has been pounded daily by time. Leveraging this desire, Tyler invites the viewer to discover the traces of mankind in that household rooms that become "memory stays" - using the term employed by Lina Bolzoni - revealed through the track.

The time is expressed following the genealogy of vanitas, in line with the "ruinism" of romantic lineage – according to Calvo Serraller - halfway between the elegy and the picturesque. An allegoricall capture of time with the participation of the viewer on the ruin. Dust to Dust offers the testimony of the decomposition of matter. Pieces of paper, wood, cloth or leather that dissolve over time to become dust. This evening is presented at Caylus Gallery (Lagasca 28) the publication of the catalog, with the participation of the authors accompanied by José Antonio de Urbina (director of Caylus). The exhibition will run until July 6. Alejandro Martinez
