'Utopia is possible' or, at least, exists

An exhibition at the MACBA recalls the ICSID of 1971 as an example of the liberating and utopian role of art in society

Barcelona, 06/21/12

From October 14 to 16 of 1971 took place in Sant Miquel beach from Ibiza the VII Congress of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), organized by the Agrupació of Design Industrial Foment of Decorative Arts (ADI / FAD .). An event that originally appears to be a professional meeting, became an unprecedented event in our country. Conceived as a meeting point between design, experimental art and architecture, the ICSID became much more. In the context of the Franco dictatorship, censorship and lack of freedoms, Ibiza had become an ideal environment for intellectuals and artists who had settled there since the '30s - Hausmann, Benjamin or GATCPAC architects –; a place where the leading edge and transgression lived with rural culture.

This ideal site chosen by the organizing team - André Ricard, Joan Antoni Blanc, Enric Tous, Ferràn Freixa, Daniel Giralt-Miracle, Francesc Pernas and Urquinaona Open Design Group – determined that the meeting gave special importance to those design trends that prioritized a more focused to industry and a more humanistic art. Groups such as Archigram and Haus-Rucker-Co, or architects as Hans Frei Otto and Walter Müller are good examples of this trend. One of the most unique projects was the Instant City. Conceived as a demonstration of the possibilities offered by new materials, the Instant City was established to provide accommodation for students attending the conference and also resulted in a manifest itself.

The exhibition now presented in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) consists of documentary material, photographs and films from various files and their own funds. Is curated by Daniel Giralt-Miracle and Teresa Grandas and presents the opportunity of rethink the convictions that led to Prada Poole in 1971 to say "utopia is possible."
