A tribute to Alberto Corral
The Botín Foundation shows at Villa Iris the Alberto Corral López-Dóriga collection (Valladolid, 1938 - Cantabria, 2008)
The importance of Alberto Corral collection lies in its pioneering role in the Spain of the '60s, '70s and '80s. A testimony of Spanish art in recent times that features works by Tápies, Palazuelo, Pérez Villalta, Gordillo, Albacete, Broto, Barceló or Uslé. A select list of artists - adjusted in number of works –, without fanfare or concessions, which started on the collection inherited from his father, Santiago Corral Perez - that contained landscape painters such as Beruete, Regoyos, Sorolla, Riancho, Salces, Carlos de Haes and Casimiro Sainz, and graphic pieces of pop and minimalism by Lichtenstein, Warhol, and Jasper Johns –, and was transformed into the contemporary art.
As part of the essential scene of the '60s, the collection brings together pieces by Tápies and Guinovart ; members of the El Paso group like Millares and Feito ; and, among them, Lucio Muñoz and José Guerrero or Palazuelo. The next decade is starring Madrid figuration of Pérez Villalta, Alcolea, Gordillo, Cobo or Quejido, and its counterpoint, the abstraction of Gerardo Delgado, Soledad Sevilla and Teixidor. The beginning of the '80s, marked by the return of traditional values in painting, is represented by Alfonso Albacete, Miguel Ángel Campano and Broto. And Barceló, Dokoupil, Patricio Cabrera of Seville and William Paneque, give the example of the transvanguard and eclecticism.
Alberto Corral collected sculpture mostly in the 90's - along with Rodin and Gargallo, figure works by Julio González, Beaudin and Anthony Caro –, and at the same time, Corral became interested in photography, adding to its collection works by Sergio Belinchón, Roland Fisher, Joan Fontcuberta, Teun Hocks ... Building their own universe. A.C.B. Collection is curated by María Corral and will be open from 27 July to 23 September at Villa Iris building of the Botín Foundation in Santander. Alejandro Martínez
